What is Avmacol® Extra Strength?

Avmacol® Extra Strength is a patented, sulforaphane-producing supplement that works in combination with Maitake mushroom extract (containing beta-glucans) to support your body's natural detoxification process better than sulforaphane alone.1Avmacol® Extra Strength provides glucoraphanin, also known as sulforaphane glucosinolate, and active myrosinase enzyme, which are the essential ingredients needed for sulforaphane production. Without active myrosinase enzyme, one may not be able to reap sulforaphane’s many health-promoting benefits.

What are the Ingredients?

Avmacol® Extra Strength contains the essential ingredients necessary for sulforaphane production in the body, broccoli seed extract (Glucoraphanin) and Myrosimax® (Active Myrosinase Enzyme). Avmacol® Extra Strength also contains Maitake mushroom extract for added immune and detoxification support.

How Maitake Mushroom Extract Works in Combination with Sulforaphane

The Maitake mushroom extract (containing beta-glucans) works in combination with sulforaphane to support your body’s natural detoxification process better than sulforaphane alone.1In addition, the Maitake mushroom extract found in Avmacol® Extra Strength provides the added bonus of immune support by promoting neutrophil function and natural killer cell activity.

The Science Behind Avmacol®
Extra Strength

The combination of sulforaphane and Maitake extract supports the movement (or translocation) from the cytoplasm to the nucleus of NRF2 and increases the levels of certain Phase 2 enzymes. Below are images of a technique called immunofluorescence which illustrate how much protein is being produced in the cell and the location of that protein.

Translocation of NRF2 into the Nucleus Following Exposure to Sulforaphane and Maitake Mushroom Extract

In control cells (left panel), the green staining indicates that NRF2 remains largely in the cytoplasm (arrows) without much protein located in the nucleus, which is counter-stained in blue. When cells are exposed to sulforaphane and Maitake (right panel), NRF2 moves to the nucleus (arrows) where it can bind to DNA to turn on expression of certain Phase 2 enzymes.

Sulforaphane and Maitake Extract Boosts Select Phase 2 Enzyme Production Including NQO1 and HO-1

NQO1 Protein Expression in THLE2 Liver Cells

In control cells (left panel) NQO1 protein expression is indicated by the green staining. When cells are exposed to sulforaphane and Maitake (right panel), the level of NQO1 staining, representing the amount of protein, is increased.

HO-1 Protein Expression in THLE2 Liver Cells

In control cells (left panel) HO-1 protein expression is indicated by the green staining. When cells are exposed to sulforaphane and Maitake (right panel), the level of HO-1 staining, representing the amount of protein, is increased.

Who Would Benefit from Avmacol® Extra Strength?

We are capable of incredible things; and when our bodies get the support they need, the results can be amazing. Avmacol® unleashes the power of broccoli to help your body fight off toxin-related stress at the cellular level.

From Broccoli to Biochemistry: How Sulforaphane Supports Your Body

Sulforaphane is a result of two specific compounds:

Glucoraphanin, found in broccoli seed and sprout extract

Myrosinase, a natural enzyme that activates glucoraphanin

What is Glucoraphanin?

Glucoraphanin, also known as sulforaphane glucosinolate, is a compound that is present in many cruciferous vegetables, most notably in broccoli. It is an essential ingredient needed for sulforaphane production because it is sulforaphane’s direct precursor. The glucoraphanin is converted into sulforaphane after it is processed by an active myrosinase enzyme.

What is Myrosinase?

Myrosinase is an important enzyme required to convert glucoraphanin into sulforaphane. Additionally, it can be found in cruciferous vegetables, though it can become inactivated during the cooking process.

The Importance of Active Myrosinase Enzyme

The conversion of glucoraphanin to sulforaphane can be expressed in this simple equation:

Active myrosinase enzyme is essential for the conversion of glucoraphan into sulforaphane. Without this enzyme, it may not be possible to reap sulforaphane's many health-promoting benefits, which is why you’ll always find Myrosimax® (Active myrosinase Enzyme) in the Avmacol® brand family.Even though it is true that both glucoraphanin and the myrosinase enzyme can be found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower, there may not be enough of either compound to allow for adequate sulforaphane production. This can be due to seed quality, soil composition, and many other factors. Additionally, the myrosinase enzyme can be destroyed during the cooking process. So while both glucoraphanin and the myrosinase enzyme can be found in the vegetables you eat, the ones you buy from the market are not reliable sources of either compound. The Avmacol® brand contains both glucoraphanin and Myrosimax® (Active Myrosinase Enzyme), the essential ingredients needed to promote sulforaphane production.*

Customer reviews

I have been using this product for the past couple years - great way to get the benefits of broccoli sprouts without the hassle of germinating yourself. Recently I switched to Amazon vs. ordering direct to take advantage of subscribe and save.

The quality and taste seem to be okay and easy to swallow. No noticeable smell and the value for the money is good. Quality ingredients. I genuinely seem to feel better and no its not just a placebo. Like anything with supplements, you will notice more of a significant difference with time.

Just look up the research papers on Avmacol if you are not convinced. This is the best product but my only concern is the fact that it’s such an unstable product and shipping it in the summer heat may be deleterious to the product.
